What is Art Coaching?
Art coaching is a one-on-one session where we’ll cover any topic you need to help you achieve your goals as an artist. This encompasses everything from business topics to art lessons, including learning the ins and outs of your medium of choice (oil, acrylic, and/or watercolor), color theory, help with a specific project, inspiration and motivation, helping you find/develop/refine your style, and whatever else you might need! Please keep in mind that this is advanced learning. That doesn’t mean you have to be an advanced artist to benefit from art coaching—it just means that these aren’t sessions where I’ll be teaching you to paint something specific. These coaching sessions are tailor-made to you and your individual needs to help you learn, grow, and level up your artistic abilities!
How do I know if it’s right for me?
If you're an artist with a strong desire to continue learning, growing, and expanding your set of skills, art coaching is probably right for you! Sit down and write out your goals. Really define where you are as an artist and where you’d like to be. Are you a beginner, a professional, or anything in between? Do you want to start an art-based business? What kind? Do you want to learn a new medium or increase your proficiency with the one you already use? Do you need some in-depth help with concepts like composition or color theory? List out any goals you have. If you have specific goals that you’ve identified, then art coaching is probably right for you!
What does it cost and how long are the sessions?
I currently charge $50USD per hour. A session can be weekly or bi-weekly and anywhere from one to two hours, depending on your needs. During these sessions, you have my undivided attention where I will teach you absolutely everything I know about your chosen topic and help with any other research you might need. I don’t proclaim to be an expert in everything, but I can give you all of the knowledge and experience I have in my 10+ years of experience as an artist, gallerist, instructor, etc., and then help you find any other information you might still need. Oh, also, all of my students will receive a 20% discount on my custom paint brushes.
How many sessions can I sign up for?
I ask that you sign up for at least three sessions. This ensures that I can cover all of the items you need coaching on, and that you have adequate time to put what you’ve learned into practice, as well as having time to cover any new questions that may arise. Beyond that, you can sign up for as many sessions as you like!
Is art coaching appropriate for beginner artists?
Yes! And there are so many benefits to learning the basics in a one-on-one setting! We’ll go at the pace YOU need. If you don’t understand or are having a hard time with something, we can spend as much time as you need on it. We can also skip over topics you’re not interested in. Whatever you need to get started on your creative journey!
Do you offer both online and in-person sessions?
Yes! Online sessions will use Skype or Zoom, and if you’re in the area of Ogden, Utah, we can meet in my studio at The Monarch on 25th St.!
Do I have to have a webcam for online sessions?
Yes. I can teach most effectively when I can see your work and can see you working. For example, many people ask me why they’re having a hard time getting their paint to spread on a canvas. There is no simple answer to that. It can be anything from the canvas to the brush to the paint, the amount of water you’re using, the way you’re holding your brush, and so many other factors. Being able to see your materials and how you use them is the only way I can answer a question like that. Before submitting the request form at the bottom of this page, please make sure you have the ability to have a successful online session with both audio and video.
I have a photograph. Will you show me how to paint it step-by-step?
Not really. I can’t develop a painting for you and teach you how to paint it, but what I will do is give you guidance and support along the way while you paint it. As you run into things you’re struggling with, we’ll spend time on that topic so that you know exactly what needs to be done to finish your painting.
Do you do critiques?
Yes and no. Once I’ve spent a little bit of time talking to you, getting to know you, and reviewing your work, I can offer you critiques. Critiques are an important part of the learning process! However, I don’t give critiques outside of my students. I believe that to give a good, constructive critique, you have to know the artist you’re critiquing. Knowing the artist's struggles and accomplishments is key to giving a good critique. Not knowing those things can potentially lead to a damaging criticism.
How do I sign up?
My schedule is currently full for the rest of the year. Please check back early 2022 for updates on openings.
Do you offer kids' classes?
At this time, no. My focus is on adult education.
